DPP Legislator's aide detained in corrumption case

Gao of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was detained yesterday for further investigation into his alleged role in a corruption case. Yao was charged with accepting a bribe of NT$10 million by brokering a deal between businessman Lou Tsao-yung's company and the National Property Bureau under the Ministry of Finance.

State-run enterprises hold first joint recruiting exam

The China Post, Taiwan - Over 43,000 applicants participated in the first joint recruiting exam held by state-run enterprises in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung under the authority of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) yesterday. The written exams for careers with Taiwan Power Company, Chinese Petroleum Corp. Taiwan, and Taiwan Water Company took place simultaneously in 25 different examination centers across the three cities. Although 19,000 of the 62,000 enrolled did not take the exam, only 2.9 percent of the participants will make it to the second round of recruiting, said a MOEA spokesperson.

Chunghwa Telecom union may form new political party

The China Post - The Chunghwa Telecom Workers' Union (CTWU) may team up with other industrial workers unions to organize a new political party and field its own candidates in the next legislative election, CTWU Chairman Chang Hsu-chung said yesterday. In a recent CTWU board of directors meeting, Chang was appointed to establish a new political party for the purpose of representing members of all workers' unions around the country, including teachers' unions, in the legislature.

Ma Ying-jeou must open up to central and southern Taiwan: KMT

DPP calls for 1 million to rally for U.N. bid

The China Post - The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) aims to draw up to one million people to a mass rally next month to promote the island's bid for UN membership for Taiwan, a party official announced yesterday. The rally will be held in the southern city of Kaohsiung, a stronghold of the pro-independence DPP, on Sept. 15, three days before the United Nations opens its annual General Assembly in New York, the official said.
